Agricultural Industry Replaces One Toxic Chemical with Another

For decades, Monsanto sold Round-Up weed killer, a herbicide linked to cancer in humans – specifically non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The company never warned consumers of the risks, so users who were diagnosed with cancer came forward with lawsuits. As Bayer (the company that bought Monsanto) struggles to resolve lawsuits, many crops have become resistant to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Round-Up.

To counter this resistance, many agricultural workers have turned to another dangerous herbicide – paraquat – to manage their crops. Unfortunately, paraquat has been linked to Parkinson’s disease, and like Bayer/Monsanto, Syngenta (the manufacturer of Gramoxone-brand paraquat) has failed to warn consumers of the risk.

Paraquat Is Poisonous

Paraquat is extremely lethal and banned in many other parts of the world, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, and China. The chemical is so poisonous that one sip could kill you, and researchers are exploring the side effects of long-term exposure. In the United States, regulatory agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have not intervened, so Syngenta continues to sell its products without warning consumers.

The only way to counter Syngenta in this scenario is with legal action, which is why paraquat litigation has become the agricultural industry’s latest toxic tort. Sadly, farmers, gardeners, and other workers are now suffering from Parkinson’s disease caused by Gramoxone (paraquat) in addition to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma caused by Round-Up (glyphosate) – depending on what products they use to manage their crops and other factors.

Upcoming Paraquat Litigation

Like Bayer/Monsanto before, Syngenta has been denying claims that paraquat causes Parkinson’s disease, despite strong scientific research linking the chemical to the condition. The first paraquat trial is tentatively scheduled for November 2022, and juries will decide whether plaintiffs’ claims are strong enough to suggest causation.

People who developed Parkinson’s after using paraquat are suing Syngenta for negligence and failure to warn, and billions of dollars are at stake.
